The Nave Gallery Annex asks local artists to capture the endless and invincible season of summer in a mason jar. Whether it be reflections on its color and light, or that never-ending bloom, entries should fit neatly in a "1-Quart Ball Wide Mouth Jar with Lid." A select number of jars will be on display at the gallery's first exhibit, PICNIC. All entries will be auctioned off to support this experimental space. The rules are simple: Stay inside the jar.
Jars will be accepted for drop-off at the Nave Gallery Annex:

Saturday, January 12, 2013 from 10 a.m.-noon

The Annex, the Nave Gallery's new special project space in Davis Square, Somerville, is seeking knitted and crocheted items for an apartment-style installation. Additionally, yarn-based visual artists working in all 2-D and 3-D media (including video--there is a TV room in need of yarn-themed video) are invited to submit work to display on the walls of the Knit Art House in Crochetville.
Questions of home and homelessness are addressed in this group exhibition. In its early years, the project space was a rooming house, welcoming strangers from near and far and providing affordable shelter for those in need of warmth and community. The Annex will recreate this home space through yarn-based items. Pieces will be placed in the pantry, dining room, tv room, fireplace, bathroom, small bedroom, and porch. Items could include (but are not limited to): food, pets, people, toys, books, plants, soap, an aquarium, etc. If you would like to submit larger yarnstormed furniture, that is a possibility but please contact us first to make sure there is space.

If you have a piece, or would like to make a piece(s) for this show, please email Tori Costa at tori(dot)costa(at)gmail.com by February 28, 2013 with a description of your piece, or a statement of your object preference. If you have images of these items, or examples of the style of what you would like to create, please include that in the email.
Submissions will be reviewed and confirmation given on a rolling basis. All items and art are due by April 6, 2013. Pieces will be made available for sale if you wish, with a 30% commission given to the gallery on all sold items. Drop-off information will be forwarded. There is no fee for entry.
This installation is part of the Wrap Around Project, the Nave Gallery's yearlong campaign to support and promote the work of the Somerville Homeless Coalition. Affordable housing--or lack thereof--is one of the factors leading to the rise in homelessness in our communities. As our neighborhoods develop into economically strong cultural centers, those on the margins are pushed out, and are often left with few options for housing.
